Here are some quick facts regarding forest fires from Natural Resources Canada:
• Forest fires started by lightning
• Represent 45 percent of all fires
• Represent 81 percent of the total area burned; and
• Occur in remote locations and often in multiple clusters.
• Forest fire occurrence and area burned are highly variable:
• The area burned by forest fires ranges from 0.7 million to 7.6 million hectares/year;
• The average area burned is 2.3 million hectares/year;
• The average fire occurrence is 8000 fires a year; and
• The average fire suppression costs are $500 million to $1 billion annually.
• Other studies have attributed lightning-related damage and disruption costs to the Canadian economy to between $600 million and $1 billion yearly (Mills et al. 2009).
Features of PLR plasma lightning protection device
PLR is not the traditional lightning rod type catcher, it is a new generation of non- flash lightning-resistant device. The PLR dissipates plasma dissipation current in both directions between the equivalent thundercloud electric field electrode plate and the ground induction electric field electrode plate to form a space leakage. This allows the equivalent electrode plate to become a "bad capacitor and cannot be charged" to form a lightning pilot and subsequent breakdown discharge, thus protecting the entire forest under the electrode plate.
The protection angle of PLR is 84 degrees, and the corresponding protection radius is 10 times the PLR installation height. Because the numerous natural tips of the trees produce plasma under the induction of the electric field of the thunderclouds, forming a lightning dissipator effect that weakens the electric field under the thunderclouds in the near-ground space.
When PLRs are placed at the highest point within the specified coverage area, the PLRs release a high concentration of positively charged plasma, which reacts with the negatively charged plasma generated by the thunderclouds, and in conjunction with the natural tip extinguisher of the trees, achieves the effect of holding back the thunderclouds.
Because a typical diameter of 4.5km will not form a lightning strike under the entire single thunderstorm, the scope of protection of a single PLR after taking into account the redundancy is: 4km × 4km = 16km^2
